Rat Infestation = Famine in India
Every 48 years the huge bamboo forests in northeast India bloom and bear fruit. The blossoms and fruit eaten by the rats cause them to exponentially multiply. Two rats can have over 14,000 offspring in only one year.
This results in an infestation of millions of hungry rats. They soon exhaust the bamboo fruit supply and then begin to ravage the mountain rice crops. The villages are dependent on these crops for their food supply and their very existence.
The last time rat infestation and famine hit this region it caused untold suffering for people 48 years ago. The famine lasted for 5 years, thousands starved to death.
Rats are worshiped as gods in the Hindu religion and as a result there are few options for the Indian government to control this rat infestation. This year the government has only sent a few dozen rat traps to the villages; which are not remotely adequate to control the millions of rats that have overrun the fields.
The Situation is Critical Point
In just one night this year millions of rats poured over the village rice fields and eat the entire rice crop, leaving nothing for the villagers to eat. This is the second year that their rice crops have been utterly destroyed, and all reserve food supplies have been exhausted. Over 97% of these mountain villagers are Christians. They do not beg for food. They are surviving on whatever edible wild roots they can dig up in the forests. These mountain cultivators live hand to mouth and depend on the annual rice harvest. Now they do not have any food or cash reserves. Little children are starving! Click here to help.
A Short Window of Opportunity to get Relief to these Starving People
Bibles For The World has taken a survey and found over 6,000 village families (typically with 6 or more per household) that are in desperate need of immediate relief aid. The dry season is the only time that the poor roads are passable for trucks to get to many of these mountain villages. When the rainy season comes (May through October) the roads are nearly impossible to use. Thus there is only a short window of opportunity to get this famine relief aid to them.
This is the HOUR of Opportunity for caring Christians to come to their aid. We must act now! We must get the entire year’s supply of rice to them before the rainy season starts. Rice is available in other parts of India that we can buy and ship to this famine stricken area. It will only take $545 to feed a family of six for the entire year. One $45 bag of rice will feed a family of six for a month.
Will you pray and ask the Lord what He would have you do to relieve the hunger and suffering of our brothers and sisters in this famine stricken region? Whatsoever the Lord says to you, PLEASE DO IT. You will please the heart of our loving Father and He will in turn fill your heart with His joy and peace. Click here to make a generous contribution to this critical relief aid effort.
